“Unlimited devices” sounds like the end of connection counting. It isn’t. The number stops mattering only when the apps work on your actual hardware, the account rules fit your household, and several people can connect without turning the network into a repair project.
The Rivera family reaches a rental house with three phones, two laptops, two tablets, a streaming stick, and a game console. Nine devices look like a clean win for an unlimited VPN. Then the television has no native app, one phone can’t keep the tunnel alive after sleep, and casting disappears when local-network access is blocked.
They don’t need nine icons. They need nine useful routes.
“Unlimited” Is an Account Rule, Not a Performance Test
The claim usually means one account may hold an unlimited number of simultaneous VPN connections. Terms can still ban resale, public sharing, automated use, or sharing beyond one household. Read the acceptable-use and account-sharing language before inviting relatives in three cities.
Check what the provider counts. A browser extension, manually configured laptop, or router profile may consume a connection differently. A VPN-capable router can often put many devices behind one account connection, but that depends on the provider’s rules and configuration.
Fair-use controls deserve a plain explanation too. “Unlimited” shouldn’t quietly become an unexplained throttle during ordinary household streaming, calls, updates, and backups.
At the rental, list the devices by operating system and job: work laptop, personal phone, children’s tablet, TV box, console. Note which ones need a native app and which need coverage at the router. Printers and smart bulbs may work better outside the tunnel, especially when local discovery matters.
The Weakest App Defines the Household Experience
A provider may advertise Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone, and television logos while shipping very different controls on each. The Windows app might offer split tunneling and a persistent kill switch; the phone or TV app may expose fewer protocols and no equivalent failure setting.
Read platform-specific documentation and recent update notes, not one combined feature grid. Confirm DNS and IPv6 handling, background reliability, protocol availability, local-network controls, and what happens after sleep or a network change.
Install every app from the provider’s verified site or the official platform store. The FTC advises VPN shoppers to research an app, review its permissions, confirm what it encrypts, and check whether it shares data. Don’t make the least technical person in the household identify a lookalike download alone.

An unlimited account may control every device, server choice, and manual profile in the house. Give it a unique password and multifactor authentication when the provider supports it. Use activation links or invitations instead of sending the main password through chat.

Watch for collateral damage. One unstable device shouldn’t force the rest of the household to change servers or sign in again. Normal simultaneous use should produce boring, independent sessions.
Local Traffic Is Where “Protected Everywhere” Gets Awkward
The tunnel can work perfectly while a phone loses the printer, casting target, shared drive, or smart-home controller beside it. Strict isolation protects against nearby devices, but it can also block the local services the family deliberately uses.
Use a documented local-network setting, a narrow split-tunnel rule, or a separate protected Wi-Fi network. Keep exceptions small and write them down; inconsistent rules scattered across nine devices become impossible to diagnose after an update.

Decide which devices connect automatically, which use the VPN only on public networks, and which remain outside. Use nearby servers by default; reserve distant locations for a specific job, because extra distance doesn’t make the tunnel stronger.

The best unlimited VPN is the one nobody has to ration—and nobody needs a resident network engineer to operate. If more connections make coverage clearer, the promise is doing its job. If they merely multiply weak apps and mystery routes, “unlimited” is just a bigger number attached to the same problem.
